![]() Much like the predictable plot, there's a usual cast of characters: the laid-back rebel, the sexy savage, the blind seer, etc. The personalities Hewitt meets during his adventures in the New Atlantis are characterized strongly, but that's not to say they're strong characters. I emphasize this because there are a few times when the critical item you need lies at the frequently overlooked ground at your feet. You look at the world from a first-person perspective, and can turn the camera 360 degrees and tilt it up and down. You'll have many opportunities to notice the fine detail taken to bring New Atlantis to life, ranging from alien plants that pulsate with life to giant swinging mechanical arms. Most of the game is a scavenger hunt, which means you'll have to pay painstaking attention to your surroundings to find the items you need to progress. As is common with modern adventure games, most of the time you'll be guiding your character through screen after screen of highly detailed, static environments with glimpses of animation here and there. ![]() The trip, though, is filled with unexpected twists and turns. The goal of the story is predictable: free the New Atlanteans and get back home. ![]() From there, the player will have to guide Hewitt through the alien culture and topography of the New Atlantis, where ancient gods rule a paralyzed society with an iron grip. You're sucked into a whirlpool much like a nautical Wizard of Oz, and an encounter with a two-headed stork afterwards is your first indication that you're not in Kansas anymore. In Atlantis Evolution, you'll take on the role of Curtis Hewitt, a landscape photographer whose journey back home from Patagonia is knocked off course by a freakish storm. But what are you going to get that old-school adventure gamer on your list, the one who waxes nostalgic about Wizard and the Princess and ranks Grim Fandango as one of the great achievements of Western culture? Atlantis Evolution may be "a" gift, but it's hardly the perfect one. ![]() Halo 2, GTA: San Andreas, Half-Life 2, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War.
